Deborah Best – Senior Consultant Solicitor

Deborah qualified as a solicitor in 2000 and brings over two decades of experience across criminal law, mental health, human rights, and judicial review.

Since becoming an accredited member of the Law Society’s Mental Health Panel in 2004, she has amassed a wealth of experience in both general and forensic mental health law.

Deborah advises, assists and represents clients detained under the Mental Health Act, appearing regularly before Mental Health Tribunals and Hospital Managers’ Hearings. She also supports clients through Care Programme Approach meetings and Section 117 aftercare planning, providing clear and compassionate advice while robustly advancing their rights and interests.

Deborah is available to represent clients in London, as well as Essex and the surrounding areas.

Stephanie Matthews – Consultant Legal Representative

Stephanie pursued a Law and Criminology degree at Cardiff University, where  her passion for human rights, criminal justice, and mental health law first began—driven by a desire to make a meaningful difference to people’s lives.

Stephanie completed the Bar Professional Training Course at Cardiff and was called to the Bar at Middle Temple in 2021 with a grade of Very Competent, where she developed strong advocacy and representation skills across varied legal settings.

She has worked exclusively in Mental Health Law since 2021 and obtained Mental Health Panel Accreditation in 2023. Based in Reading, she represents clients across the South.

Rumana Burhan – Consultant Solicitor

Rumana qualified as a solicitor in 2010 and achieved Mental Health Panel Accreditation in 2012.

She brings over a decade of experience advocating for clients with complex mental health needs, including both restricted and unrestricted patients, across hospital and community settings.

She is available to represent individuals throughout Yorkshire and the Humber as well as across the North West in Bury, Manchester, and Oldham.

Rumana is also a duty solicitor specialising in criminal law, with considerable experience representing clients with mental health difficulties in the criminal courts and during police interviews, including those conducted within secure hospital environments.

Rebecca Cantrill – Consultant Legal Representative

Becky Cantrill is an experienced Mental Health Representative and an accredited member of the Law Society Mental Health Panel, representing both civil and forensic patients subject to the Mental Health Act 1983.

Beginning her legal career at just 16 as an office junior in a solicitors’ firm, Becky quickly progressed, earning her Police Station Accreditation at 21. Her extensive experience in criminal law gives her a distinct advantage in navigating the intersection of the criminal justice system and forensic mental health, particularly for clients detained in low, medium, and high secure hospitals.

Becky has a proven track record in tribunal advocacy, consistently delivering robust representation. She has advised and assisted clients in complex and high-profile cases.

Beyond forensic mental health, Becky has successfully represented professionals in the sports and performing arts industries detained under the Mental Health Act 1983, achieving positive outcomes.

Becky is highly regarded for her meticulous case preparation and client engagement, frequently representing Community Treatment Order (CTO) patients, CAMHS cases, and individuals with complex mental health needs and eating disorders.

Additionally, she assists vulnerable individuals in litigation settings, providing representation for those suffering long-term psychiatric injuries.
